Not-So-Naked But So-Much-Fun!

bike_ride_1World Naked Bike Ride comes to Roanoke for the first time ever in a tame but oh so glorious way on Saturday, June 13th to encourage alternative modes of transportation in our lovely city! Get out your loveliest underlings (aka underwear) and enjoy the wind.

Meet up in the parking lot directly across from The Water Heater (outside) at 11am to get decorated. We are hoping to have delicious donuts + healthy treats too, byoc (bring your own coffee and water). Of course you are encouraged to bike in undies, however, body painting, costumes that incorporate undies as a theme and anything wildly entertaining but legal is applauded. Speaking of legal this bike ride has been okayed with our friendly city police department and they want to ride too!

We will go over all traffic laws for bicyclists to keep everyone safe and to make sure we are raising awareness for alternative modes of travel in a fun and humorous way. Bring your helmet! At noon we ride to the downtown historic farmers market. See route and updates below. Please no naked riders! However, all Vikings welcome! Let us know if you would like to be hauled in the Viking RickShaw!

In celebration of the enormous rise of bike culture in our region we ride in fun bliss to show how much joy abounds in riding bicycles. Come one, come all!

THE ROUTE AND A FEW UPDATES

We will leave from the Water Heater at 813 5th Street at noon and head down 5th street toward Campbell Avenue taking a right on Campbell Avenue and travel on Campbell until reaching the Historic Farmer’s Market. We will then take a right on Market Street through the market area followed by a right on Church Ave to the intersection at Jefferson Street where we will take another right and head down Jefferson until the intersection at Salem where we will take a right onto Salem. Our ride will end as the group on Salem Avenue on the grassy area in front of the entrance to the Hotel Roanoke’s bridge from downtown to the hotel where you can of course hang out on the grassy area for photo-ops, laughs, and small talk. We may then disperse from this location and back to regularly scheduled programming.
Our lovely men in blue (some on bikes) will ride with us and provide an escort through intersections when needed. However we encourage everyone to follow normal bike safety and traffic laws unless otherwise noted by the police officers on duty that day.
Okay let’s make this an awesome event, fun for all participants and spectators alike!
